Ligue 1 Lessons: Lorient boss Sylvain Ripoll didn't get the dress code memo

Reuters

With another weekend of Ligue 1 action in the books, we take a look back at some of what we learned from the latest slate of matches.

Marseille - Lyon was a mess

Plenty of positives this week in Ligue, so a fleeting mention of Sunday's disaster should do.

Mathieu Valbuena's return to Stade Velodrome was a low point for Ligue 1, as the football played between French giants Lyon and Marseille took a back seat to an ugly display from some Olympique supporters.

Sloan Privat and Jimmy Briand form an adequate attacking duo for Guingamp

With goal-machine Claudio Beauvue's summer departure to Lyon, there were questions about Guingamp's ability to find the onion bag during the 2015-16 Ligue 1 campaign, with the onus resting on strike pairing Sloan Privat and journeyman Jimmy Briand.

The strikers each scored once for the Brittany minnows in their 2-1 victory over new boys GFC Ajaccio, with the Privat opener highlighting the synergy between the two.

Montpellier has a goal-scoring dilemma

A solitary point from an away draw at promoted Troyes is all Montpellier has to show for six matches. They've scored two goals and allowed eight to sit bottom with GFC Ajaccio, ahead by virtue of a slightly less embarrassing goal differential.

Since the 2011-12 Ligue 1 winning campaign when the south coast side scored 68 on the back of Olivier Giroud's 21 tallies, Montpellier has scored 54, 45, and 46 goals respectively.

Sunday's visit to Caen provided momentary hope for Rolland Courbis' side, as a Jonas Martin penalty knotted the affair at 1-1 before their hope for a much-needed away point was dashed by a Jeff Louis 93rd minute goal off an Andy Delort rebound.

Lille goals watch 2.0

As covered during last week's installment, Herve Renard's Lille has an aversion to both scoring and allowing goals. Heading into this week's action, the club had only one goal for and one against while treading water in 14th on four draws sandwiched by a win and a loss.

Friday's visit to Stade Rennes featured a harsh red card to 'keeper Vincent Enyeama who brought down Giovanni Sio in the box, only for Paul-Georges Ntep to have the spot kick saved by Mike Maignan's effort.

It was Sofiane Boufal to the rescue again for Lille, as his 49th minute near-post finish was his and the club's second on the season. Ntep would play spoiler in the 74th minute, as Rennes moved a point shy of table topper Paris Saint-Germain.

Goals of the week

St. Etienne's teenager Jonathan Bamba opened the scoring Sunday at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard with this brilliant individual goal, saving a little panache after a dribbling display for a curling finish beyond the reach of Nantes shot-stopper Remy Riou:

Adrien Regattin's veering 23rd-minute strike opened the scoring in Bordeaux's 1-1 draw with Toulouse at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux.

Attacking on the counter, Lorient midfielder Romain Philippoteaux threaded a pass between the legs of Monaco's Joao Moutinho onto the right foot of Goal of the Week winner Ibrahim Ndong, who fired a rocket from 35 yards past a lunging Danijel Subasic:

Sylvain Ripoll style watch 1.0

Lorient manager Sylvain Ripoll is known for dressing like a dad that has to pick his daughter up from gymnastics but has no idea where he left his car keys.

That's him on the left with the look of a man wondering, "Have you seen my car keys?"

In defiance of their gaffer, Lorient assimilated with the locals and put on a stylish performance in the principality to beat an underwhelming Monaco side 3-2.

For the record, Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim was dressed rather sharply, looking none too pleased to be watching his side drop their third straight home match to a club led by a gymnastics dad.

A la prochaine, mes amis.
