Clemson holds on to beat Louisville despite sloppy play

Clemson didn't look particularly good in Louisville on Thursday night, but the Tigers got what they came for: a win. They topped the Cardinals 20-17, and although it was by a small margin, it was a big in-conference road win on short rest for Dabo Swinney's squad.

It was an underwhelming performance for both teams, as they each turned it over twice. Louisville had its chances, as it took a 10-7 lead in the third quarter, but then Clemson's defense went after quarterback Kyle Bolin.

With three minutes remaining in the game, Louisville was down 20-17 and kicker John Wallace missed a 38-yard field goal that would've tied the contest. The Cardinals got one more possession, which ended with a Hail Mary attempt that Clemson intercepted to seal the victory.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson finished 21-for-30, with 199 yards and two touchdowns to match two interceptions.
  • Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino kept his starting quarterback a secret up until game time. Bolin got the start and went 19-for-34 with 238 yards and two interceptions. Lamar Jackson threw a pass for 15 yards.
  • Clemson running back Wayne Gallman was the key to the Tigers' offense, rushing for 139 yards on 24 carries.
  • Hunter Renfrow caught a 25-yard touchdown and Jordan Leggett caught a 32-yard strike as they combined for Clemson's touchdowns.
  • Clemson kicker Greg Huegel was 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts, converting from 36 and 27 yards.
  • The Tigers move to 2-0 all time against Louisville, winning the other matchup 23-17 in 2014.
