Report: John Lucas III works out with Heat as team seeks guard depth

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran NBA point guard John Lucas III may be taking his talents to South Beach, as the 32-year-old is working out in the Miami Heat's gym ahead of training camp, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Miami is reportedly looking to shore up depth at the guard positions, and Lucas is a potential fit.

With 13 guaranteed contracts heading into the 2015-16 campaign, the opportunity is there for Lucas to land his fifth NBA gig in as many seasons.

He signed a 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons last season after leaving China's Fujian Sturgeons, where he put up 26.3 points, seven assists, and 4.6 rebounds over 28 games.

Detroit signed Lucas for the remainder of the season after a second 10-day contract, and he averaged 4.7 points and 2.9 assists in 13 minutes per game over 21 appearances.

The only depth currently penciled in behind starting point guard Goran Dragic is Mario Chalmers, whose future with the Heat remains a mystery as the team looks to shed salary to avoid going too deep into the luxury tax. Tyler Johnson (partially guaranteed) and Josh Richardson (guaranteed) may be in the running for minutes at the one-spot, as well.

Lucas already has a special place in the hearts of Heat fans, albeit for all the wrong reasons. As a member of the Chicago Bulls during the 2012 season, Lucas was posterized by former Heat player LeBron James, with "The King" jumping completely over him for a vicious baseline alley-oop jam.
