Brock Nelson's agent hasn't heard from Islanders in weeks

With training camp set to begin Thursday, the lines of communication between Brock Nelson and the New York Islanders appear to be down.

This according to Nelson's agent, Ron Salcer, who says it's been quite some time since the two sides have spoken.

"We haven't heard from them in six weeks," Salcer told Arthur Staple of Newsday on Monday. "Garth (Snow, the Islanders' general manager) and I talked six weeks ago after they made an offer, which was nowhere near commensurate with what players like Brock are making. Garth said he'd get back to me and that was it. No negotiations whatsoever."

The 23-year-old forward is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders, as well as a 20-goal, 42-point performance in his second NHL season. But as a restricted free agent with no arbitration rights, Nelson and his camp are at the mercy of what Snow is offering, which, in Salcer's estimation, isn't up to par.

"I don't want to get into numbers, but for the first year, it's half of what players similar to Brock are making," Salcer said. "And in (a) year (or) two, it's a third of what players similar to Brock are making ... We're not being unreasonable. This is all their doing."

Snow is likely keeping an eye on next summer, when Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen, and Michael Grabner will hit unrestricted free agency. As such, he may be cautious about handing a young player a nice deal based on a small sample size of games, albeit productive ones to date.

Salcer did say he called Snow on Monday and hopes the GM will come around, especially considering - as Staples notes - since Charles Wang became the Islanders owner, the rule has been that players who do not sign by the start of training camp are to sit out for the entire year.

"Is Brock the guy you want to bring the hammer down on?" Salcer asked. "He's a great kid; he wants to be in camp to be part of this good thing the Islanders have going. And they're the ones keeping him from that."

Nelson was drafted 30th overall by the Islanders in 2010 and has recorded 34 goals and 68 points in 154 NHL games.
