Notre Dame overcomes loss of Zaire, wins thriller over Virginia

Things looked bleak for Notre Dame late against Virginia. After losing quarterback Malik Zaire with a gruesome ankle injury, backup DeShone Kizer found Will Fuller on a 39-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the game for the 34-27 win.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The late touchdown pass wasn't Kizer's first on the day, the Irish executed a fake field goal on the opening possession. Kizer pitched the ball to Durham Smythe for the opening score.
  • Notre Dame out gained Virginia's offense 154-28 in the first quarter.
  • C.J. Prosise rushed for 155 yards and one touchdown for the Irish.
  • Cavalier quarterback Matt Johns completed 26-of-38 for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
  • This was Notre Dame's first-ever trip to Charlottesville, Va., in its 127-year-old program.
  • The Irish were 0-for-10 on third down conversions.
