Senators' Hammond not 'expecting to replicate' incredible NHL debut season
"The Hamburglar" isn't looking to be a flash in the pan.
Andrew Hammond became one of hockey's great stories down the stretch last season, posting a record of 21-1-2 upon being called up on an emergency basis by the Ottawa Senators.
That run propelled the team into the playoffs and earned him a three-year, $4.05-million contract extension.
Now a fixture on an NHL roster, Hammond is eager to prove that's where he belongs.
"Lots happened (last season) and it's a great thing to be able to look back on, but I think the important thing is to keep looking at the future and what's going to happen this season," Hammond said Tuesday, according to Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen.
"The chapter on last season is closed and it’s all about writing a new one."
While he's realistic about the possibility of a repeat performance, he believes he can help the Senators remain competitive whenever he's in the crease.
"By no means am I expecting to replicate that or anything," he said. "I think to get something close to that is important, to give the team a chance to win every night, is something I'm looking to do."
Hammond's numbers slipped in the playoffs, allowing Craig Anderson to reclaim the starting gig. He'll likely start the season as Ottawa's second option, but has certainly proved anything is possible.
