Report: Cavs add high-flying D.J. Stephens to camp roster

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The man with the highest recorded vertical jump in DraftExpress' database is heading to camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

D.J. Stephens, who recorded an obscene 46-inch vertical in a 2013 workout with the Brooklyn Nets, signed on with the Cavs for training camp, according to multiple reports.

Stephens was a late cut of the New Orleans Pelicans last preseason and played in Russia for the season. If he's cut by the Cavs in similar fashion - the team already has 13 guaranteed contracts on the books, plus two non-guaranteed deals, and a likely deal for restricted free agent Tristan Thompson - he could land with Canton of the D-League as a Cavs affiliate player.

Should he make the roster, it won't be his first taste of NBA action, as Stephens appeared in three games with the Milwaukee Bucks on a 10-day contract in 2013-14. He scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds in 15 minutes.

The Memphis product was raw coming out of college and hasn't produced great numbers abroad. He averaged seven points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 57.7 percent in the Russian league last season, and 8.4 points and 7.1 rebounds across two leagues the season before that.

Still, he should be good for some highlights if he gets into a preseason game. The former Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year supplements his strong wing defense with an incredibly entertaining transition game.
