Reports that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has fully healed from his finger amputation may have been exaggerated, and the issue may be causing a rift between the former Pro Bowler and the franchise.

Talks between Pierre-Paul and the team appear to have broken down over a disagreement concerning his readiness to play, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.

Pierre-Paul underwent a physical with the Giants on Monday and reportedly wants to suit up for the season opener, but his hand "isn't quite ready," and it could be more than a month before he plays, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Aditi Kinkhabwala.

Pierre-Paul also hasn't signed his franchise tag. The 26-year-old isn't expected to sign the $14.8-million tender any time soon, as he's waiting until he's fully healthy to ensure he'll receive a prorated portion of the total amount, according to Rapoport.

Signing the tender would allow the Giants to place Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list and forgo paying him for the first six weeks of the season.
