Sergio Romero: I thank Van Gaal for trusting me

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero realises his chance with Manchester United is fleeting, and he thanks manager Louis van Gaal for the "huge support" as he prepares to compete for the No. 1 spot with David De Gea.

Romero has kept four clean sheets in six starts for United so far this season. All the while, De Gea has sat out, waiting for a move to Real Madrid that never came.

"Playing for United is a dream and if God helps me this dream will never end," the 28-year-old told La Nacion, courtesy of Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News.

"As I have been saying: I have to thank Van Gaal for trusting me."

Romero, who was a free agent this summer, confirmed last month that United and only United expressed interest in him. No other club wanted to sign the Argentinian goalkeeper.

He worked with Van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar from 2007 to 2009, and that relationship helped both parties: United with a question mark in goal and Romero with a place to play.

"Although I had not done a pre-season, I started playing for the biggest club in the world," Romero added.

"It’s important for a goalkeeper to have this support. That is because there is no rotation between goalkeepers - a goalkeeper starts or he is benched. They are the only two choices - there is not a third one."

But Romero is no longer guaranteed a spot, with De Gea set to stay with United for at least one more season.
