Giants release Steve Weatherford

The New York Giants have released punter Steve Weatherford, the team announced Friday.

The Giants sent punter Robert Malone packing Tuesday as part of their first wave of roster cuts, suggesting Weatherford had won the job. However, head coach Tom Coughlin did not sound impressed when discussing Weatherford's performance in training camp and the preseason.

"Well, there's a game to go, and it's going to be a competitive thing," Coughlin said ahead of Thursday's preseason finale, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "Not necessarily with the guys that are here. That goes for any position. Any position. People have to understand that. You're not competing just against the guys here, you're competing against the waiver wire."

Weatherford joined the Giants in 2011 after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Jets.
