Pierre-Paul plans to return to Giants next week, reportedly expects to play early in season

Jason Pierre-Paul is planning to end his lengthy absence and report to the New York Giants next week, team owner John Mara confirmed Thursday to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

Pierre-Paul's 2015 status was put into question after significant injuries suffered in a fireworks accident reportedly resulted in the amputation of a finger, but the veteran defensive end expects he'll be able to play early in the regular season, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano of ESPN.

An exact timeline for his return to game action likely won't become clear until he can be evaluated by the Giants' medical staff, however, as Pierre-Paul refused treatment from the organization in the weeks that followed the accident.

The Giants elected to use the franchise tag to keep him off the free-agent market this offseason, but Pierre-Paul has been unwilling to sign the tender until he's healthy enough to pass a physical.

Upon receiving clearance to play, Pierre-Paul should quickly regain his starting spot on the Giants' defensive front.

The two-time Pro Bowler has established himself as one of the NFL's most explosive pass-rush talents through his first five seasons, recording 42 sacks in 75 games and 49 starts.
