RG3 won't play vs. Ravens after further evaluation from independent neurologist

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens after receiving further evaluation from an independent neurologist.

The team initially announced Thursday that Griffin had been cleared just days after suffering a head injury in last week's preseason contest, but it has now been recommended that he take one-to-two weeks of rest before additional testing.

Washington released an official statement on the quarterback's evaluation from NFL independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtzke:

Per discussion with Neuropsychologists and with Anthony Casolaro M.D., we had anticipated yesterday that the patient would be cleared for full participation in gameplay this weekend; however, upon further scrutiny today of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from gameplay this weekend and be retested in one-two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to gameplay can be made.

Griffin doesn't appear to be facing an extensive recovery timeline.

He sent out the following tweet Friday evening, shortly after the announcement was made.

The 2012 first-round pick is looking to bounce back after the consecutive disappointing seasons that followed an electrifying rookie year, and a two-week absence before being reevaluated could bring his Week 1 availability into question.

Kirk Cousins will temporarily move to the top of the Redskins' quarterback depth chart, and should see plenty of snaps with the first-team offense in Saturday's game.
