49ers GM: Ahmad Brooks will remain on team but is excused from activities

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke confirmed Thursday that outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks will remain with the team, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Brooks was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor sexual battery, stemming from an alleged assault in December 2014. Former 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald was indicted on one count of rape of an intoxicated person, in a case involving the same victim as in Brooks' case.

"Ahmad is still a member of this team," Baalke said.

"We excused him from team activities to get on top of this. ... Obviously, when you're in a situation like this, it's important that you get back to your family. It's also important for him to start taking care of business on his end. And it's our job to stay focused here on what we need to stay focused on."

Baalke also said the NFL would determine any possible sanction for Brooks.

"They've taken over,” Baalke said, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. "Now it's in their hands to make a decision based on the personal-conduct policy."

Asked if Brooks would play for the 49ers in the interim, Baalke was noncommittal: "We don't have enough info to make that decision."

Brooks recorded 30 tackles, six sacks, and a forced fumble in 13 games last season.
