Tennessee suspends Pig Howard for season opener

Spruce Derden / USA TODAY

Tennessee will be without its leading receiver when it kicks off the regular season against Bowling Green next week.

The Volunteers have suspended Pig Howard for the Sept. 5 game for violating team rules, reports Jimmy Hyams of Knoxville radio station WNML.

Howard, a senior, led the Volunteers in receiving yards the past season, recording 54 receptions for 618 yards and one touchdown.

He also ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Howard's unavailability could further decimate an already reeling Volunteers receiving corps.

Wide receivers Jason Croom and Vincent Perry could also miss significant time this season, with both scheduled to undergo knee scopes Friday, reports Wes Rucker of 247Sports.

The length of their absences will be determined following the procedures.
