Rutgers suspends Laviano, Carroo, 3 others for 1st half of season opener

Rutgers will open the season on Sept. 5 without two of its top offensive weapons.

The team has suspended potential starting quarterback Chris Laviano and star wide receiver Leonte Carroo for the first half of the game against Norfolk State because of a team curfew violation, reports Joe Schad of ESPN.

Coach Kyle Flood told reporters Tuesday that Laviano, 20, is also being punished for using a fake ID.

Sophomore Hayden Rettig, who has been competing with Laviano in training camp, will now get the nod as a starter for the opener.

Carroo finished second in the Big Ten with 1,068 receiving yards last season.

Rutgers will also suspend linebacker Kevin Marquez, punter Tim Gleeson and cornerback Ruhann Peele for the first half of the game.
