Phillies shell Mets' deGrom for 7 runs in shortest start of career

New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom posted the worst outing of his career against one of the worst teams in the majors.

The 27-year-old was tagged for a career-high seven runs (six earned) off eight hits - three home runs - and a pair of walks in 2 2/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday before manager Terry Collins opted to go to the bullpen trailing 7-2.

DeGrom never appeared to get settled. After allowing two of the first three batters to reach base, Ryan Howard launched a three-run shot to left field. Cameron Rup would deposit a solo home run an inning later before Domonic Brown's three-run shot blast in the third etched the outing into deGrom's career-worst record books.

"I don't think I located one pitch." deGrom told reporters.

DEGROM'S AUGUST STARTS

Date Opp IP H R (ER) SO
Aug 1 WSH 6 6 2 (2) 7
Aug 7 TB 6.1 6 2 (2) 7
Aug 12 COL 7 2 0 (0) 10
Aug 18 BAL 7.2 5 1 (1) 6
Aug 24 PHI 2.2 8 7 (6) 3

The start is an anomaly considering how well the sophomore has pitched this season. DeGrom entered the outing having allowed three or more runs in just one of his last 17 starts, and watched his ERA jump from 1.98 to 2.29 after walking off the mound Monday.
