Louisville's Bobby Petrino: 'Not close to a decision at all' on starting quarterback

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said he remains undecided about who he'll name as the Cardinals' starting quarterback, though he hinted that a scrimmage on Saturday could prove vital.

Will Gardner, Reggie Bonnafon, Kyle Bolin, and freshman Lamar Jackson are challenging for the coveted slot.

The race has proven to be one of the most competitive in the ACC, with Gardner, Bonnafon, and Bolin all leading the school to at least one victory last year.

"I'm not close to a decision at all," Petrino said at the team's kickoff luncheon Friday, as reported by Steven Jones of The Courier-Journal. "They've all had days where they played real well, and they’ve all improved and all understand the offense better. I think we are throwing the ball better as far as our timing goes, accuracy goes. And then they’ve all had moments where they haven’t did what we expect them to."

Crediting the close nature of the battle, Petrino suggested he might not anoint a No. 1 quarterback two weeks before the start of the season as he originally intended.

"Ideally after tomorrow’s scrimmage you’d like to have a starter named. I'm not sure if that’s going to work out. I guess we’ll have to see how it all plays out," he said. "Usually I like to have two weeks where you work and you know who your starting quarterback is. This has been a very close competition, and they’ve all had their moments. We’ll see how tomorrow goes and evaluate the film all day Sunday and Monday."
