This surely wasn't the first chapter Charles Aranguiz envisioned in the Bundesliga.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen announced Friday that the 26-year-old midfielder, who joined the club from SC Internacional just over one week ago after guiding Chile to its first-ever Copa America title, suffered a torn Achilles tendon in his left foot in training and will be on the sidelines for "months."

The injury comes as a devastating blow to Aranguiz, whose move to one of Europe's top five clubs seemed long overdue following successful spells at Universidad de Chile and Internacional.

"We're all very shocked and we are of course suffering with him," said Rudi Voller, Leverkusen's sporting director. "Charles had really been looking forward to playing his first Bundesliga game at Hannover. We will do everything we can to ensure Charles comes back as quickly as possible from this serious injury."

Hakan Calhanoglu echoed Voller's comments, taking to Twitter to wish his new teammate well.

Arturo Vidal, Aranguiz's international teammate who joined Bayern Munich this summer, also expressed his condolences via Twitter: "A giant hug, brother Charles. You're great and you will be come back much better. Strength and blessings. All of Chile is with you!"

Aranguiz had yet to make his debut for Leverkusen before suffering the injury, sitting on the bench for the club's 2-1 win versus TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, as well as its 1-0 defeat at Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs.
