Giants owner on Jason Pierre-Paul: 'I'm beyond the point where I'm annoyed'
Jason Pierre-Paul has still yet to return to the New York Giants after suffering a significant hand injury in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, and team owner John Mara is frustrated with the way the situation has played out thus far.
Mara was critical of his star defensive end in an interview with WFAN's Mike Francesca on Monday, expressing disappointment that Pierre-Paul chose to decline the help of team doctors.
"I'm beyond the point where I'm annoyed," Mara said, according to Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News. "I wish he'd handled it better but we're beyond that. Do I wish he came here and had our doctors look at him? Yes."
Previous reports have indicated that Pierre-Paul will stay away from training camp until he's healthy enough to pass a physical. That would prevent the Giants from placing him on the non-football injury list.
With little contact between player and team, however, the Giants aren't entirely sure how severe the damage to Pierre-Paul's hand is, though he reportedly had an index finger amputated.
"The biggest concern is we don’t know what the extent of the injury is," Mara said. "When he shows up, we'll evaluate him. We've been led all along to believe by his people he'll be able to play this year."
The standout defensive end could very well return and play this year, potentially even by Week 1, but the uncertainty surrounding his status is evidently frustrating for the Giants as they try to plan for the season ahead.
Pierre-Paul established himself as one of the NFL's most productive pass-rushers, with 42 sacks in the five years after joining the club as a first-round draft selection. New York used the franchise tag to keep him off the free-agent market earlier this offseason.
