IK Enemkpali's locker-room altercation with Geno Smith cost him a job with the New York Jets, but he could also face discipline from the NFL.

The NFL is reviewing Tuesday's incident and the linebacker could be punished under the league's personal conduct policy, as it is considered a case of workplace violence, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. He could also face criminal charges, should Smith choose to go that route.

Enemkpali, a sixth-round pick of the Jets in last year's draft, punched Smith during the altercation, breaking his jaw. Smith is expected to be sidelined 6-10 weeks.

The altercation stemmed from Smith accepting a $600 plane ticket from Enemkpali to appear at his football camp and then failing to show after someone close to him was killed in a motorcycle crash, sources told ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Smith reportedly told Enemkpali that he would reimburse him the money, but had yet to as of Tuesday. ESPN's Ryan Clark reports that Smith put his finger in Enemkpali's face before he was punched.

Enemkpali issued a statement Tuesday apologizing for his actions:

I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans. Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets.
