Jets rookie Devin Smith has broken ribs, will miss majority of training camp

New York Jets rookie wide receiver Devin Smith has suffered broken ribs and will miss the majority of training camp.

The second-round pick out of Ohio State left practice on Friday after taking a fall during drills and did not return. According to the team, he will be held at a local hospital overnight as a precaution.

Todd Bowles only said he saw Smith "walking gingerly coming off" following practice, but it now looks like the first-year head coach will have to rely heavily on veteran receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker to get him into the season.

New York worked out wide receiver Greg Little last week, but he ended up signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets may have to dip into the pool of veteran free agents in order to solidify depth behind their top three targets.

The speedy Smith, who ran a 4.42 forty-yard-dash at the combine, is expected to give the Jets a deep threat when he's healthy. If he's unable to play to start the season that role will likely be occupied by Jeremy Kerley who's not ideally suited to the role.
