The Sacramento Kings have waived forward Eric Moreland, the team announced Wednesday.
The Kings are facing a bit of a roster crunch following a busy and tumultuous offseason, and Moreland, whose $845,059 salary is non-guaranteed, is a victim of that reality. Moreland's salary would have become fully guaranteed on Saturday, and while he's a nice prospect, the Kings seem to value flexibility here.
Moreland was signed as an undrafted free agent last summer, and he began the season by excelling in the D-League, averaging 13.7 points and 12.7 rebounds over seven games. A left shoulder labral tear ended his season as the calendar turned, and he was still working his way back into form at Las Vegas Summer League earlier this month.
An explosive leaper at 6-foot-10, Moreland has potential as a rebounder and shot-blocker but is somewhat limited offensively. Given the Kings just used the No. 6 overall pick on Willie Cauley-Stein, a similarly offense-challenged but far superior prospect, Moreland being on the outs makes sense.
He'll likely look to land a camp invite with another team but could be faced with the difficult "D-League or overseas" decision shortly.
