Steve Kerr undergoes surgery on herniated disk

Steve Kerr was scheduled to undergo surgery on a herniated disk Tuesday, the Golden State Warriors head coach told CSN Bay Area's Monte Poole.

The NBA champion bench boss appeared to be moving well during the Warriors' run to the title this spring, but Kerr told CSN two weeks ago that back issues would keep him out of the American Century Celebrity Golf Classic in Lake Tahoe. He also told the San Francisco Chronicle during this month's Las Vegas Summer League that he had "thrown out" his lower back and couldn't walk more than 30 yards.

"Getting old," is how Kerr summarized the injury.

Kerr turns 50 in September. Last month, he became the first rookie head coach to lead his team to the NBA title since Pat Riley in 1982. Kerr played 15 seasons in the league before retiring in 2003.
