Timberwolves' Towns wants Garnett to teach him how to be a champion

First-overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns wants to be the catalyst behind the Minnesota Timberwolves winning the franchise's first championship. To get there, he'll look to teammate Kevin Garnett for mentorship and advice on how to reach that ultimate goal.

"The biggest thing that I want to really take away from Kevin Garnett, is learn how to be a champion," Towns said during an appearance on the "Boomer & Carton" show. "He has a ring. I want to get a ring also, in my career. Possibly multiple. I want to do that and I want to actually bring that to Minnesota first."

Garnett was a key member of the 2008 Boston Celtics title team, winning his first and only championship after playing 12 seasons in Minny.

It took "The Big Ticket's" departure from the team that drafted him in 1995 to finally be able to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy, joining forces with Ray Allen and Paul Pierce to form an elite "Big Three" in Beantown.

Towns isn't surrounded by a slew of savvy veterans looking to win that elusive title before their respective careers come to a close. Playing alongside the Kentucky alumnus are 2015 NBA Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins (20), Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio (24), and human highlight-reel Zach LaVine (20) - a core which may be years away from even qualifying for the postseason, letting alone winning a championship.

"I like the studs on my team," Towns said following a joke Carton made about the talent Garnett went to join with the Celtics.

Towns and Garnett have already begun forging a relationship heading into the 2015-16 season, with the two seen working out together on a practice court while in Las Vegas for the Summer League.

Garnett agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal to stay with Minnesota this summer, with a role in Minnesota's front office awaiting him upon retirement, meaning the lines of communication with Towns should be open long after he hangs up his kicks.
