Louis van Gaal criticises Bastian Schweinsteiger following Manchester United win

The honeymoon period appears to be over for Bastian Schweinsteiger after manager Louis van Gaal criticised the German international's lackluster performance during Manchester United's preseason friendly.

Despite his side's rather easy 3-1 victory against the San Jose Earthquakes, van Gaal expressed anger over United's poor second-half performance.

He was disappointed in his side's lack of possession and defensive setup in the second frame following a first-half performance where van Gaal praised the team for understanding of the type of football he was attempting to establish.

Schweinsteiger wasn't spared from his tirade, as van Gaal lumped his new signing in with the rest of the players who performed poorly in the final 45 minutes.

"He was also bad," Van Gaal told reporters. "Players can play bad, certainly when you have only three days' or six days' training session in your legs and you have to play 45 minutes.

"Everybody can think it is easy to step in but it is not easy. I thought the first match (Schweinsteiger) played very well and now he played bad but that is also a process."

Andreas Pereira's second-half goal was the only aspect of the interval that pleased van Gaal, with the Brazilian's marker making it 3-1 following goals from Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. That was Depay's first goal since signing with United from PSV Eindhoven.
