Blazers' Allen Crabbe leaves summer league game on stretcher, X-rays negative

Russ Isabella / USA TODAY Sports

Portland Trail Blazers guard Allen Crabbe left the team's Las Vegas Summer League game on a stretcher Wednesday.

Luckily, he avoided serious injury and has been diagnosed with a left ankle sprain.

Crabbe jumped to block a shot from Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns and landed awkwardly, falling to the floor. Crabbe immediately cried out in pain and grabbed at his left leg. After being attended to for several minutes, a stretcher was brought out to help him off the court, as Crabbe was unable to put any pressure on his left foot.

The Blazers told the NBA TV broadcast that X-rays on Crabbe's left ankle were negative, but that he would not return to Wednesday's game. He's scheduled for an MRI on Thursday to further evaluate the sprain.

Teammate Meyers Leonard, on hand as a spectator, accompanied Crabbe through the tunnel to be evaluated, while a pair of former teammates showed support on social media.

Crabbe is entering his third season with Portland, who acquired him on draft night in 2013 with the No. 31 pick after giving up two second-round picks to acquire the selection. He played sparingly as a rookie but saw more run in 2014-15, averaging 3.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 13.4 minutes over 51 games.

If the injury to Crabbe were serious, it would threaten to spoil a great opportunity in front of him. The rebuilding Trail Blazers could use his shooting - he's a career 36.4-percent 3-point shooter - and the competition for playing time should be wide open.

The 6-foot-6 Crabbe looked great in summer league play so far, averaging 18 points on 55-percent shooting in the team's first three games and scoring eight points in 15 minutes before leaving Wednesday.

The 23-year-old has a fully non-guaranteed contract for 2015-16 at the $947,276 league minimum.
