Jewsbury scores in stoppage time as Timbers beat Earthquakes
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) During their recent run of success, the Portland Timbers have talked about how important it has been to get contributions from everyone on the team.
In their latest win, it was Jack Jewsbury's turn to come through again.
Jewsbury scored in second-half stoppage time to give the Timbers a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night.
A free kick by Diego Valeri into the San Jose penalty area found Gaston Fernandez, but the Timbers foward's effort turned into more of a clearance than a shot, bouncing wide of the goal. That's when Jewsbury came flying in, jumping and making an awkward swing with his left foot that was more desperation than technique.
The result was a shot that floated over San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham and into the net for Jewsbury's second goal of the season.
''I just remember going to the far post and I just going to try to get something on it,'' Jewsbury said, ''and (I) was fortunate enough it found the back of the net.''
Both of Jewsbury's goals this season have been game-winners in second-half stoppage time.
Portland thought it had taken the lead in the 87th minute, when Fernandez headed in a cross from Alvas Powell, but the Timbers' forward was ruled offside and the goal was waved off.
Despite dominating possession over large stretches of the game and taking 23 shots, it looked appeared Portland wouldn't be able to convert any of that into a goal. A lack of accuracy didn't help, as Bingham only needed to make six saves on all of those shots.
''I thought we were outstanding, from start to finish,'' Portland coach Caleb Porter said. ''I think there were times we could have shown a little more quality in getting some of our chances on frame. That's the one thing, for me, I think we could have done better.''

Portland has now won six of its last seven MLS matches to move into a tie with Los Angeles for third place in the Western Conference.
San Jose snapped a two-game winning streak and remained in seventh place in the West.
''I'm really disappointed. We defended pretty well tonight for long periods of time,'' San Jose head coach Dominic Kinnear said. ''The way the game was going, it was either going to be a spectacular goal or a bit of a freaky one, and it turned out to be the freaky one.''
San Jose played without captain and leading scorer Chris Wondolowski, who is with the U.S. national team in preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins Tuesday.
Kick-off was pushed back six hours from its original 2 p.m. schedule start due to the abnormally high temperatures hitting Portland the last couple of weeks.
