The San Antonio Spurs have tabbed assistant coach Becky Hammon as their head coach for NBA summer league action.

In doing so, Hammon will become the first female head coach in summer league history, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Last summer, Natalie Nakase served as an assistant for the Clippers' summer league squad.

After an extensive playing career that spanned stops with the San Antonio Stars and New York Liberty, Hammon retired and was subsequently hired by Gregg Popovich as an assistant for the Spurs. That made Hammon the first-ever full-time female assistant coach in any of the four North American major sports leagues.

The 38-year-old Hammon will oversee the Spurs at the upcoming Las Vegas Summer League from July 10-20. The roster will include a few notable names, including 2014 first-rounder Kyle Anderson and former Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Will Cherry.
