It's a new era in the Big Apple.

New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather is expected to step down from the position in order to focus on team president responsibilities, while his former assistant, Jeff Gorton, will take over the vacated role.

Sather called his experience with the Rangers "a very enjoyable time," while Gorton made it clear that the hockey legend will remain a sounding board for him.

"We are going to work together...I am going to use Glen as much as I can." Gorton said during his introductory press conference.

It's a move that was long expected, as the club would not allow Gorton to speak to other teams about vacant GM positions.

Sather became New York’s 12th president and 10th general manager in June 2000.

Under his watch, the Rangers went to the Eastern Conference Final three times in the past four years, with a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.
