The San Jose Sharks took a big bite out of the free-agent market.

Defenseman Paul Martin has agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the club, general manager Doug Wilson announced Wednesday.

The 34-year-old is capable of locking things down in his own end and chipping in offensively. He's a strong possession defender who can play on both the penalty kill and power play.

"Paul is versatile, puck-moving veteran who enhances our younger group of talented defensemen," said Wilson. "He comes from a winning environment, is capable of playing heavy minutes and is accustomed to playing with high-end players. He was a player that we had targeted and this is a place that Paul wanted to come play."

In 697 career games with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins, Martin recorded 43 goals and 229 assists
