Phillies' Mackanin to remain interim manager for remainder of season

The Philadelphia Phillies will be under the guidance of interim manager Pete Mackanin for at least the remainder of the season.

General manager Ruben Amaro announced Tuesday that the 63-year-old will remain under his current title for the duration of the 2015 campaign.

"It's a good feeling," Mackanin told reporters. "I'm glad I know my fate until the end of the season."

Mackanin, who served as the team's third-base coach since 2014, was promoted to his interim role on Friday after manager Ryne Sandberg abruptly announced his resignation following a 26-48 start.

The Phillies' front office also received a shakeup, as it introduced Andy MacPhail on Monday. The veteran executive is set to replace Pat Gillick as president at the end of the season and will play a role in anointing a manager.

While Mackanin is an option, Amaro made it appear as if the team will likely go in another direction.

"I think it’s pretty clear, and Pete knows this, that it doesn't mean he is a candidate to take the job at the end of the year by any consideration," Amaro said. "I think we're going to have a clean slate when we make this decision. He may or may not be a part of that decision-making process.

"But Pete is being a good soldier and he understands that. He's taking on this responsibility because it is important for us."

The Phillies have gone 1-3 since Mackanin took over.
