Athletics' Gray hospitalized with flu-like symptoms

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that right-hander Sonny Gray, who was scratched from his scheduled start against the Colorado Rockies, remains hospitalized due to flu-like symptoms.

Gray, who landed in the hospital Monday night, is undergoing "traditional tests" and it remains unclear when the 25-year-old will return to the mound.

"It hit him pretty hard," Melvin told MLB.com's Jane Lee. "He's actually been dealing with it the past couple of days, but last night it got worse for him. He didn't feel great during the day, then it got worse to the point they had to bring him into the hospital."

Though the former first-round pick "still sounded pretty weak" when he spoke to Melvin on the phone Tuesday morning, he told his manager "he was a lot better than he felt late last night."

Gray, one of the top candidates to start next month's All-Star Game, owns a league-leading 2.09 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 16 starts this season.

Right-hander Chris Bassitt was recalled to start in Gray's absence. The 26-year-old has a 3.71 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 63 innings for Triple-A Nashville.
