Seahawks' Michael Bennett says holdout is 'definitely possible'

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

If there's any lingering doubt about Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett's plans for the summer, he did his best to end it at his youth football camp this weekend.

Bennett plans to hang out in Hawaii while his teammates report to training camp next month. Or, at least, he wants the Seahawks to believe he will stay in the tropics and away from the team.

"Hawaii's weather is great ... I don't mind staying home for a little while," the Honolulu resident told Rob DeMello of KHON2 in Hawaii on Saturday.

Bennett is seeking a raise from the four-year, $28.5-million contract he signed in 2014. He reportedly wants top-eight defensive end money.

"Of course, I think I've outplayed the contract that they gave me," Bennett said. "It's one of those things where you have to let your agent do the talking with the team and hopefully something good comes out of it. It never hurts to try."

Bennett, who skipped voluntary workouts this offseason but reported for mandatory minicamp earlier this month, furthered his stance on Monday in a phone interview with NFL Network's Steve Wyche.

The 29-year-old says a holdout is "definitely possible" and he noted that his game is about more than numbers.

"I know a lot of people disagree because I don't put up all the numbers, but if you watch the games, I'm doing good things," he said. "They want me to play five positions but pay me for one."

Seattle dealt with a similar situation last summer with Marshawn Lynch when the running back held out briefly during training camp. The Seahawks would surely like to avoid that with Bennett, although, it may be inevitable at this point.

Bennett's contract is likely low on the priority list for Seattle, behind Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner's extensions.
