Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton out 4-6 weeks with wrist fracture

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

August: That might be the next time we hear the sound of a Giancarlo Stanton home run screaming out of a ballpark.

The Miami Marlins placed Stanton on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left wrist hamate fracture.

After swinging and missing, wincing, and whiffing some more in a 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, Stanton's X-rays after the game showed nothing, which wasn't good news.

The swelling was so bad X-rays couldn't provide a definitive conclusion. The morning after, news came down that Stanton will undergo minor surgery to repair the fracture in his wrist.

The slugger is expected to miss four to six weeks, the team announced, that means he won't participate in the All-Star Game or the Home Run Derby.

If that's not bad enough, the club was already on a high, expecting starter Jose Fernandez back on the bump any day now.

Coming into the weekend, Stanton leads the majors with 27 home runs and 67 RBIs, but with the latest injury, the 58 home runs he was on pace to hit will decrease drastically.

For now, the MLB's leader in hits (Dee Gordon), leader in homers and RBIs (Stanton) and one of the top impact arms in the game (Fernandez) will have to wait another day to step on the diamond together.
