Bills' Matt Cassel on roster bubble following disappointing minicamp

The Buffalo Bills' three-way quarterback race could soon turn into duel.

Matt Cassel was so unimpressive during Bills' OTAs and three minicamp sessions he's been designated the clear "loser" of the group, with EJ Manuel getting the slight nod as the "winner" by ESPN's Mike Rodak.

There's also question whether Cassel will even make the final roster. The Bills can clear Cassel's $4.15-million base salary if they release him before the regular season, which would seemingly become a favorable option if he continues to struggle.

Cassel is the most experienced of the Bills' three quarterbacks with 71 career starts, though his numbers have been mediocre at best the past four seasons. Manuel has had his own share of struggles, but unlike Cassel, his contract is guaranteed. Then there's Tyrod Taylor, who has yet to start an NFL game.

So far, the Bills have given all three quarterbacks an equal opportunity to win the starting job. However, head coach Rex Ryan acknowledged recently there's a lack of star power at the position.

"Safe to say we won't have LeBron (James) at quarterback," Ryan said. "We may have a LeBron at defensive tackle or defensive end, but we don't have him at quarterback."

The Bills may not have a LeBron, but if Cassel doesn't start separating himself from the pack, his chances of earning a spot on the final roster appear slim.
