Jason Day being monitored closely, hopes to play the weekend after on-course collapse

Jason Day collapsed while walking on the fairway of the ninth hole at Chambers Bay. It was his final hole of the day after starting on the back nine.

Day's agent Bud Martin released an update, saying "Jason was diagnosed to have suffered from benign positional vertigo."

He is being monitored and is hoping to play the weekend.

Day has been dealing with dizzy spells of late, having to withdraw from the AT&T Byron Nelson just three weeks ago after experiencing vertigo.

ESPN's Jason Sobel tweeted this quote from Day earlier in the week.

"I turned around and he was just laying there," Jordan Spieth said of his playing partner after the round.

Luckily for Day, he was on the final hole when he collapsed, allowing medical staff to get to him quickly.

''I was glad we could get done,'' Justin Rose said. He also played with Day. ''At least he has a chance to recover for tomorrow, hopefully. I don't know if this is one of those things that is 10 minutes or a day. I don't know.''

Day underwent a procedure that was supposed to quell his dizziness, that was later diagnosed as vertigo, but he has continued to experience issues with his equilibrium.

''I know he didn't play in Dallas this year because of vertigo,'' Tiger Woods said. He was playing in the group just behind Day on Friday. ''I played with him at the Memorial and talked to him in depth, they did a blood panel and all of that stuff. I hope he's OK.''

The Aussie would recover to finish the hole with a bogey, and was helped off the course. Day was even for his Friday round and sits at 2-under for the tournament.
