53-year-old Herschel Walker thinks he could still play in the NFL

There's a long-held belief that NFL running backs typically fall off a cliff around the age of 30, but as far as Herschel Walker is concerned, that's nonsense.

The former running back, who turned 53 in March, told WFAN radio's "Boomer & Carton Show" on Thursday that he could still play in the NFL.

"There is not a doubt in my mind, if I played today, I (could) contribute to a team," Walker said.

"Let me tell you the reason why (I can play)," he continued. "Running backs today don't play every play. They only play, like, a couple of plays and they go out of the game."

Which begs the question: why hasn't Walker returned to the NFL?

"I thought about it, but I'm still fighting," he said. "I've gotta get out of the fighting first. Once I get out of the MMA stuff, then I may go back and play. I want to be the George Foreman of football."

Walker played 13 seasons in the NFL, suiting up for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants. For the past five years, he's been competing in mixed martial arts, which he credits for keeping him in excellent shape.

"The last time I ran a 40, I ran a 4.3," Walker said. "That was like a year ago. That was when I had not been doing any track work. All I had been doing was (MMA)."

So, if any teams are on the lookout for a 53-year-old running back, they know who to call.
