New Orleans Saints quarterback Ryan Griffin required over 50 stitches after being hit in the face with a champagne bottle during an argument at a lounge, according to New Orleans police records accessed by The Times-Picayune.

Griffin was initially signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013 and vacillated between the team's practice squad and waivers over the past two seasons.

Griffin told police he was out with friends at a New Orleans lounge on June 7 when he thinks he "bumped into" another group of men.

"Mr. Griffin believes words were exchanged and he was struck in the head with a champagne bottle," New Orleans Police Department officer Tony Mitchell said in the police report. "Mr. Griffin said that his friends told him that they believed it was a champagne bottle because the contents were sprayed all over them when he was struck with the bottle."

"We are aware of the situation and the matter is under investigation," said Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel. "Ryan has been exemplary as a Saint and he has our full support."

The Tulane product is competing against Luke McCown and Garrett Grayson for a backup spot, with Drew Brees firmly entrenched as the Saints' starting quarterback.
