Orioles rout Phillies with franchise record 8 home runs

The Philadelphia Phillies were the unfortunate victims of a Baltimore Orioles power surge.

After losing starter Jerome Williams to an unspecified injury in the first inning of Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles, it was only the start of a historic downhill spiral for the Phillies.

The Orioles belted a franchise record eight homers in a 19-3 rout, including two-homer games from Manny Machado and Chris Parmelee.

Players with Homers Inning Pitcher
Manny Machado 1 Jerome Williams
Manny Machado 2 Dustin McGowan
Jimmy Paredes 2 Dustin McGowan
Chris Parmelee 2 Dustin McGowan
David Lough 3 Dustin McGowan
Chris Davis 4 Dustin McGowan
Chris Parmelee 6 Justin De Fratus
Ryan Flaherty 8 Jeff Francoeur

After Williams gave up six runs and two walks in 2/3 of an inning, Dustin McGowan was tasked with stopping the bleeding.

After striking out David Lough for the final out of the first, his outing unraveled from there.

In the second inning, the Orioles saw home runs from Machado (his second in as many innings), Parmelee and Jimmy Paredes.

It didn't get any better from there, as David Lough and Chris Davis also homered off McGowan in the third and fourth innings. When reliever Justin De Fratus came on to pitch in the fifth, he got ejected in the sixth for throwing at J.J. Hardy, forcing manager Ryne Sandberg to go to the bullpen, which he wasn't too happy about.

The skipper said he wasn't impressed that his reliever put himself in a position to get ejected, given he was needed in that particular circumstance.

But despite getting tossed, it eventually led to the lone bright spot for the Phillies, as Jeff Francoeur sat down the O's in order in the seventh, the only inning in which they failed to score a run.

He also managed to record a strikeout.

Following the game, Sandberg stayed mum with regards to the embarrassing result.

"Almost don't know what to say," Sandberg said.

Realistically, that's about all he can say about this game.
