Report: Nuggets interview Blazers assistant for coaching vacancy

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Nuggets have interviewed Portland Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool for their head coaching spot, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

While it is reported that interim coach Melvin Hunt remains a strong candidate for the job, along with Mike D'Antoni and former Sacramento Kings bench boss Mike Malone, it appears the Nuggets are doing their due diligence.

Vanterpool has been on Terry Stotts' staff in Portland since 2012, earning credit for his work in helping develop point guard Damian Lillard. Vanterpool will work this summer with the Canadian national team, headed by fellow Blazers assistant Jay Triano.

Denver remains the only current head coaching vacancy in the NBA. The Nuggets have said they want someone in place by the draft, which is two weeks from Thursday.
