Report: Chargers' Mike McCoy told players to move on without Eric Weddle
The contract situation between safety Eric Weddle and the San Diego Chargers appears to be getting uglier by the minute.
Weddle has been holding out from organized team activities in the hopes of getting a new contract – something the Chargers are unwilling to discuss until after the season, according to his agent, David Canter. But that's only the half of it.
Head coach Mike McCoy told his players last week to move on from Weddle, suggesting that those who are unhappy with their contract shouldn't bail on their teammates, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
McCoy declined comment when asked about his remarks, but according to Acee, some veterans thought it was highly inappropriate of their head coach to side with management in such a situation.
It sounds as though Weddle will rejoin his teammates eventually, but it won't be surprising if this season is his last as a Charger.
"He will play his final 16 games as a Charger as a free safety – nothing else," Canter said Monday, suggesting the veteran will no longer see the field on special teams. "… It's blatantly obvious after me asking the team time and again to extend us that Eric isn't wanted. So it's time for Eric to move on (to) where he can win and is wanted."
