Chiefs' Andy Reid: Eric Berry doing well in recovery from Hodgkin's lymphoma

Star safety Eric Berry is progressing in his recovery from Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer, according to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Berry was one of the league's preeminent safeties, being named to three Pro Bowls after being selected fifth overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. Just 26 years old, Berry's cancer diagnosis last December shocked the league.

In spite of the harrowing disease, Berry is fighting valiantly to return to the field and Reid provided an update on his potential return to football.

"Eric is doing well," Reid said to Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star. "He’s going to get his big end-of-the-school (year) exam down here. He's been through all the treatments, so now the doctor is going to sit down with him and go over exactly what the results of all that are.

“So we don't have that, and Eric doesn't have that quite yet, but everything up to this point has point has been very positive from the doctor and from Eric. So I think we're heading in the right direction with that."

Berry recorded 37 tackles in six games last season before the cancer diagnosis.

If Berry is unable to return by the start of the year, Ron Parker is slated to start at strong safety.
