Seahawks fan starts fundraising campaign to help re-sign Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson is slated to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, and some Seattle Seahawks fans are doing their all to accelerate his imminent payday.

Tim Pennoyer of Glendale, Cal., started a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $5 million for the Seahawks to re-sign their star quarterback. At the time of publishing, the campaign reached a relatively paltry $1,081 over 13 days.

Pennoyer wrote the following message on the donation page:

My oh my, Wilson is the best thing to happen to the city since Ken Griffey Jr! Russell Wilson belongs in Seattle. If you're like me, you're sleepless in seattle with no signed contract yet. It's May already! We can't lose Russell because of something silly like lack of money. That's where we come in.

The premise is simple yet effective. Wilson needs money to stay in Seattle, we have money, therefore we give money to Wilson IF and only IF he signs. Let's give Wilson the money to ensure that he stays where he is loved. The more salary cap we can free up, the more the Seahawks can go after more talent and we can get back to the Superbowl!

The Seahawks are still working on new contracts for Wilson and Pro Bowl inside linebacker Bobby Wagner, both of whom were selected in a vaunted 2012 draft class.

Wilson's 36 career wins are the most by any quarterback through their first three seasons, with the 26-year-old reaching a number of milestones throughout that span. Selected in the third round of the draft, he revitalized the Seahawks' franchise, appearing in back-to-back Super Bowls and emerging victorious in 2013.

While Pennoyer's efforts are a tribute of sorts to Wilson, Seahawks general manager John Schneider will almost certainly work out a lucrative deal with the star quarterback before he reaches free agency.
