Bears release Ray McDonald after domestic violence, child endangerment arrest

The Chicago Bears released defensive end Ray McDonald after he was arrested early Monday for misdemeanor domestic violence and child endangerment, the club announced.

Santa Clara police confirmed the arrest, adding that McDonald assaulted a woman while she was holding a baby.

"We believe in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear," general manager Ryan Pace said. "He was not able to meet the standard and the decision was made to release him."

Bears offensive guard Kyle Long did not mince words about the news:

McDonald was previously arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in August 2014 after a pregnant woman showed bruises on her body to San Jose police and alleged McDonald beat her. No charges were filed.

In December, a different woman accused McDonald of sexually assaulting her when she was passed out, prompting the San Francisco 49ers to release him. Police said McDonald won't be charged in that case, and he is suing the woman.

The Bears signed McDonald to a one-year deal in March that didn't include any guaranteed money.
