Valencia 'keeper Diego Alves suffers torn ACL, meniscus

A match that saw Valencia CF secure Champions League qualification was marred by a devastating injury to 'keeper Diego Alves.

After colliding with defender Michel Macedo in his side's season finale versus UD Almeria, Alves was forced to exit the pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by Javi Fuego. He was later seen arriving at Valencia Airport - where supporters were waiting to congratulate the team - with bandages around his right knee and with a walking stick in his left hand.

On Sunday, the Brazilian 'keeper's worst fears were confirmed as Valencia announced he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament as well as a torn meniscus.

No official timeline was given for Alves' recovery, but he'll certainly be unable to participate in the upcoming Copa America, where he was expected to start between the posts for Brazil's national team and establish himself as the Selecao's first-choice shot-stopper.
