Jets OC Chan Gailey: Geno Smith will start, no training camp QB competition

New York Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey says Geno Smith is his starting quarterback, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Gailey said there will be no quarterback competition between Smith and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who the Jets acquired via trade this offseason.

"It wasn't a thought" to have a camp battle, Gailey said, adding he's excited about working with Smith, a player he believes has shown a lot on film and who can make all the throws.

Smith was erratic in his second season with the Jets, completing 59.7 percent of passes for 2,525 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Though there was no shortage of lowlights, Smith also showed flashes of franchise quarterback potential.

Gailey's spread-type offensive scheme appears to be a better fit for Smith's skill set than former coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast scheme. In West Virginia's spread scheme, Smith put up prolific numbers.

The Jets have worked hard to surround Smith with the weapons he needs to orchestrate a formidable offense, trading for veteran receiver Brandon Marshall and adding speedy deep threat Devin Smith in the second round of the draft.
