Canada proved too much to handle for the Russians as it skated to a 6-1 win in the gold medal game at the World Championship on Sunday.

The Canadians claimed their first gold medal since 2007 and their first medal since 2009. The Russians on the other hand failed to defend the gold they captured at last year's tournament.

The Russians couldn't manage to get anything going offensively, mustering just five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes and none in the second period.

Meanwhile, the Canadians took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after the first and opened the floodgates in the second by scoring three goals. They would add two more goals in the third.

Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin finished with a tournament-leading nine goals. His last goal in the second period - that made it 4-0 for Canada - was a thing of beauty thanks to Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux.

With the win, team Canada captain Sidney Crosby became the ninth Canadian member of the Triple Gold Club. The honor goes to players who have captured Olympic gold, the Stanley Cup and a World Championship gold.

After joining Russia for its semifinal game and scoring a goal and an assist against the United States, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet.

Mike Smith continued his dominant play in goal for the Canadians, making 10 saves on 11 shots. Smith allowed just one goal against in the medal round, going just over 190 minutes without allowing a goal.

Meanwhile, Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves on 37 shots in a losing effort.
