Golovkin notches 14th straight title defense with TKO of Monroe Jr.
Gennady Golovkin isn't going to let anyone come between him and his middleweight titles. Golovkin completed his 14th straight title defense with a sixth-round TKO of Willie Monroe Jr. on Saturday night in Inglewood, Calif.
Golovkin retained the WBA super middleweight, the IBO middleweight and the interim WBC middleweight titles with his win. He improved his record to 33-0 and registered his 20th straight knockout victory. Of Golovkin's 33 career victories, 30 have come by way of knockout.
Monroe was knocked down twice in the second round and then Golovkin finished him off in the sixth. Monroe got to his feet prior to the referee's 10- count, but he appeared dazed and wobbled before saying "I'm done," leading the ref to call an end to the bout.
After the tilt, Golovkin said he's ready for a "big fight" next and laid out a challenge to either Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez.
