Belarus shocks United States at World Hockey Championship

Alexei Kalyuzhny scored twice as Belarus upset the United States 5-2 at the World Hockey Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic on Thursday.

Artur Gavrus, Artyom Volkov and Alexander Kitarov scored second-period goals to give Belarus a 3-0 lead, and that was all the offense they would need.

New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson got the Americans on the board late in the middle stanza after a tremendous individual effort by projected second-overall draft pick Jack Eichel.

This whole play by Eichel is fire

Kalyuzhny wasn't impressed, though, as the Belarusian forward scored twice in the third period.

Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug scored on the power play to cut the lead in half, but that was as close as the Americans would get.

Goaltender Kevin Lalande stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the victory, which temporarily vaulted Belarus to the top of Group B with nine points and a record of 3-0-1-0.

The Americans lost for the first time in this tournament and slipped to second in the group with a 3-0-0-1 record.
