Manchester United announce Memphis Depay signing from PSV

Manchester United got a head start on their summer shopping list Thursday after confirming the signing of forward Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

The Premier League club announced that the signing is pending a medical and won't be official until the summer transfer window opens in June.

The announcement from both teams comes after months of speculation about Depay's future, with the Dutch club indicating in April that his departure was imminent, despite the extension he signed in August.

While neither team announced the exact terms of the agreement, British media outlets project United will pay PSV around £25 million in a deal that's believed to keep Depay at Old Trafford until 2019, with an option to extend his contract another year.

Depay, 21, garnered the attention of multiple teams throughout Europe after his impressive display at the World Cup with Netherlands.

Interest in his services increased following a successful Eredivisie campaign when he led PSV to its first league title since 2008 and topped all scorers with 21 goals.

PSV sporting director Marcel Brands offered his best wishes to the young forward and said he and the club are proud of Depay's progression to the Premier League.

"Memphis has gone through all the teams of the PSV youth academy and has played an important part in the national title this year," Brands said in a statement. "He's a wonderful exponent of our training and will make a nice transition to a magnificent club in a beautiful competition.

"In a sporting sense, we are obviously losing a fantastic player who is of great value to the team, but PSV is happy to allow him to make this wonderful step."

Depay's arrival could spell the end for the failed Radamel Falcao experiment. With the Dutch international's ability to play as a central striker, United appear likely to decline the option to sign the Colombian striker to a permanent deal beyond their loan agreement with AS Monaco.
